Case Study - Boghall Drop In Centre

Boghall Drop in Centre approached the Scottish Tech Army with a request for help to rebuild the web site in a user-friendly way that would enable them to keep it updated easily and make sure that the users of the service could be kept updated about everything that the Centre offers.

The Boghall Drop in Centre is a small grassroots charity that works with the local community to make a difference to the lives of those in the local community.  Its goal is to work to identify the current needs in the community and work to find services or partner agencies to help address them. The goal is to be part of the community's support mechanisms so they know what is available if they need support. The staff did not have access to in-house IT expertise, hence the request for support for this project.

The Scottish Tech Army mobilised a team of volunteers that worked with the team at the Drop-In Centre to understand what they wanted to achieve and to help them implement it using the web platform that they had chosen for their site. The team worked with the staff of the charity and managed to design the new web site within a few weeks and help the staff of the charity understand how to update the content and keep it up to date.

Kelly Drummond, Charity Co-ordinator at the Centre said “In a digital age, websites and social media presences are essential for every business and charity but not everyone has these skill sets.  Having the STA offer support not only to build the website but teach us how to maintain it going forward was a god send.  We enjoyed working with a number of skilled volunteers”.

One of the volunteers, Erni Wo, joined as a volunteer in November 2021 while she was studying for an M.Sc. in Information Technology at the University of Glasgow. She said “I enjoyed building the new web site for the Boghall community wing. The handover documents from another volunteer, Sara, were more than enough for me to understand what has been done already in this project. Vicky from the STA guided me nicely and told me what still needed to be done. The website builder tool that was used for the client’s website actually took longer than expected to learn, but once I got the hang of it, I was able to build the website really fast with all the features that the client needed. The client loved how the website looked and the user instruction I made helped her a lot as well.”
