Our skilled volunteers are our super power …

Why we are doing this

It is literally a new world

Starting in early 2020, the spread of COVID-19 has changed the way that billions of people live their lives - the pandemic is unprecedented in the scope and scale of the impacts it is having in the short term and it is presenting challenges that are either new or substantially different from what we have seen before. While the immediate crisis is beginning to be brought under control in many countries, the full recovery process is likely to take much longer to achieve.

Charities are under massive pressure

Some sectors of society and the economy have seen substantial falls in the level of activity, whereas many organisations that are now or will be involved in delivery of front-line services are facing huge increases in demand and are struggling to keep up.

They could be helped in doing so by the application of digital technologies to create solutions that make information more easily available, streamline processes and allow them to focus on their core activities by minimising overhead and improving efficiency. However, many of them face the challenge of limited time to investigate these opportunities and a lack of available resource and skills to implement the solutions.

People are stepping up … but some are being forced to stand down

All over the world, there are inspiring examples of companies and individuals that are pivoting what they do or starting new projects to deliver solutions to the immediate problems that they see around them and to prepare us for the process of transitioning out of the immediate restrictions that are in place.

On the other hand, many companies in the tech industry are having to downsize as a result of a much more challenging business climate, either temporarily by putting staff on furlough or permanently through having to make headcount reductions. As a result, there is a pool of talent that could be contributing their skills and creativity to the delivery of innovative solutions but are lacking a vehicle through which to do so.

Solving real problems, real fast

We know there is demand, we know there is supply - The Scottish Tech Army will provide the mechanism to put it all together. Using a combination of crowd-sourcing for ideas and capabilities and agile development techniques for delivery we will empower people in the tech community to play their part and make a difference, supporting frontline organisations and their communities while putting their unique talents to work.
